John Walson was recognized by the U.S. Congress as the founder of the cable television industry. In 1948, Walson erected a mountaintop antenna tower and ran a coaxial cable on Pennsylvania Power & Light Company (PP & L) poles to his Mahanoy City, Pa. appliance store to demonstrate television; he then extended lines to homes of TV purchasers, which marked the beginning of Service Electric Cable TV, Inc. Marlowe Froke came to the Pennsylvania State University in 1959 as an associate professor of journalism. Mr. Froke was named director of broadcasting in 1964 and established WPSX-TV, the university's public television station. In 1981, Froke was named director and general manager of the University's Division of Learning and Telecommunications Services.
